Folsom elementary school sold 45 pizzas for a fundraiser. small pizzas sold for $7 each and large pizzas for $10 each. the total amount of funds received from the sale was $402. how many of each size pizza were sold? explain please?!!!
You have to set up to equations and do linear combinations to solve.
x-> small pizza y-> large pizza
x + y = 45
7x + 10y = 402
do linear comibnations

What you want to do is create two equations with two unknowns. Using the universal variables (x,y) we know that x + y = 45. We also know that 7x + 10y = 402.
If you times the first equation by 7 you get 7x + 7y = 315. Now, subtract the second equation. You get -3y = -87. So, Y equals 29. Then X equals 45-29 which is 16.
So, there were 16 small pizzas and 29 large pizzas. We can check this because 16*7 plus 29*10 should equal 402. Sure enought, 112+290 does equal 402.
References :
S + L = 45
7S + 10L = 402
Solving by substitution:
S = 45 – L
7(45 – L) + 10L = 402
315 – 7L + 10L = 402
3L = 87
L = 29
S = 45 – L = 45 – 29 = 16
References :
L+S=45 (number sold)
7S+10L=402 (money collected)
L=45-S
7S+450-10S=402
48=3S
S=16 , hence L=29 number sold

something times 7 had to make that 2 at the end. What times 7 makes a 2 at the end????
well how about 7*6=42
subtract 42 from 402
402
- 42
_____
360
how many tens go into 360?
10
360/10=36
Sooo……..
Six $7 pizzas were sold as well as 36 $10 pizzas.
References :
x = # of small pizza sold
y = # of large ones sold
so
(1) ` ` ` ` ` ` x + y = 45
(2) ` ` ` ` ` 7x + 10y = 402
(1) x 7 ` ` 7x + 7y = 315
subtracting ` ` 3y = 87
y = 29 large pizza
x = 16 small pizza
