I just finished an event for cancer and it is similar. People really are hurting for money right now, they want to see what they can get out of it. Try to get some sponsors involved, so if they show up, they can draw for a guitar, gym bag, dinner at your local res, lessons in dancin'.... This will entice more people to consider to show up. This has always worked for me when we did difficult shows. As for the sponsorship, tell the store owners and such, that you will give out event pamphlets and it will have their company and number on it, this will be a great advertisement for them, for an exchange of goods. Try it, it will really help. Also, contact the local media, they will usually help promote it if it is for a good cause. Good Luck.
References :
Signed musician for BCrich
