The School of American Ballet (SAB) celebrated their Winter Ball, which this year also served as their 75th Anniversary of the school. This glamorous black-tie dinner dance at Lincoln Centers David H. Koch Theater was attended by over 400 patrons, including the Schools board members and alumni. SAB Teacher and former New York City Ballet Principal dancer Jock Soto is one of the hosts of Plum TV’s new arts show, Prism. Oli Mauamalaga Dancing Tongan Tau’olunga for Serra High School Luau Fundraiser 2009 to raise money for tuition for Serra High Polynesian Students.

Just like my sister Sarah, Oli had only 48 hours between school & homework to learn this dance.

We are proud of you girls!

“TRADITIONAL MONEY DANCE”
The dance is original to Samoa (Taualuga) and of course to Tongans (Tau’olunga).

The word Taualuga is the last part of the house that the men put on top of a Samoan fale (HOUSE).

The dance signifies all hard work is done and now time to celebrate.

Thats where the word Taualuga comes from the top and last part of the fale *(finale).

As far as the dance part goes the main dancer(s) a taupou or manaia dances beautifully while the other dancers aiaiuli (supporters) dance inappropriately or make funny gestures to make the main dancer(s) look more elegant and dignified.

Opposite spectrums to showcase a unique performing art that still lives on today.

****As far as money goes, that is just to show appreciation and love to GUEST(S) OF HONOR and to the group who’s dancing.

All Monies collected, as tradition, goes to the MAIN DANCERS [GUESTS OF HONOR(s)]….

Siva Samoa is the Samoan term for a Samoan dance.
Traditional Samoan dancing is one area of the culture that has been the least affected by western civilisation. It requires the dancer to retain grace; movement of the arms and hands are done so in a subtle but delicate manner. In earlier times, high chiefs or matais performed this special dance but modern day it is performed by a taupou. A version of Siva Samoa, called Mak Sa’moa, is a popular traditional dance style in Western Samoa.
Other forms of traditional Samoan dancing include the taualuga, siva afi, and sasa.
This is somewhat similar to what Latinos do for weddings….(TRADITIONAL MONEY DANCE)

For LATINOS, during a wedding!….
The custom of pinning money to the gown of the bride is centuries old It was once done to help the young couple set up housekeeping and gave them money to begin their new life together. Today, it is more popularly known as the money dance” and money may be pinned on both the bride and groom in payment for dancing with them
