HELP ESTABLISH LIBRARY PROJECTS IN JAMAICA

HELP Jamaica e.V. is a registered ociation founded in 2008 in Germany with an international network of supporters in Europe, the US, the UK and the Caribbean. We cooperate with artists, promoters, music and clothing labels, corporations, embassies and of course dedicated individuals. A local branch of HELP Jamaica! in Jamaica is in the process of founding. We aim to establish library and education projects in poor Jamaican communities and thus try to open up new opportunities and hope for the children.

We want to provide free access to books and computers, skilled and caring staff to help learn and establish proper reading- and basic computer skills – a necessity for success in school and life – and wish to encourage creativity, talent, hope, ambition and excellence.

We believe in inspiration and qualification as a means to break the circle of frustration and open up fresh ways and hope for the youths of Jamaica – ways out of poverty and crime!

Goals and ways to get involved

Our primary goal is to raise fundings in order to support library projects in Jamaica like the Trenchtown Reading Centre (www.trenchtown
readingcentre.org) and to build more reading and education centers all over Jamaica. By this means we aspire to make free education possible, especially for children and youths who otherwise dont have access and dont get the support for their education. You can help us with donations, fundraising in your own town or region, with creative ideas how to access funding, with active help and work in our ociation, or simply spread the word there are many ways to support the youths in Jamaica!

History, Present and Future

In 2007 during our stay in Kingston we met the founder of the Trenchtown Reading Centre (TRC), Roslyn Ellison from Canada. Amazed by the concept we went down in the next days and we were overwhelmed by what we saw: a light, inviting room with fans, bookshelves with an amazing collection of new and suitable books for children and adults, related to the life and surrounding of the people. Caribbean, African American, African children books, biographies, nature and animal books, scientific literature, music books – a fascinating collection you wouldnt expect in a library in one of Kingstons most notorious ghettos!

Immediately we were convinced that we wanted to support the Reading Centre. We soon started to think about how we can help the TRC and if it would be possible to establish more such centers in other areas.

Back in Germany our enthusiasm was met by others and we founded the registered non-profit ociation HELP Jamaica! in order to legally set up a foundation to raise funds, help the TRC and to make the vision of establishing similar libraries and education centers all over Jamaica become a reality! With our international network of supporters we are now approaching the step of building a next center and you can help make it happen!!!
